South Mountain Raceway – Every now and then a car will just jump out there and grab your attention. The ‘51 Chevy of Bryan Fegley is just such a car. The wild, old-school paint job is something one just can’t walk past without taking an extended look.

Fegley shared that he bought the car out in California and had it shipped back east. Out west, it had been raced without the wild paint and powered by a small block. Somewhere along the line after that racing life came the wild paint and a big block. That’s when Fegley acquired the car and started making tweaks to make it all his own. One of the current changes he has on the schedule; changing the rear axle gears, because as Fegley says, “It’s set up for 8th mile and a lot of racing we do is quarter mile.”

With the stout big block engine, backed by a Powerglide and 9-inch rear, the car puts down some impressive times. In the 1/8th mile, it runs 6.40s and in the quarter, it runs 10.60s at around 128 mph. With that paint job at that speed, it’s probably a chore for the racer in the opposite lane to maintain focus. The car is an attention-grabber wherever it goes. It certainly grabbed Fegley’s attention as he confesses, “I like purple so I had to have it. I like stuff that’s different, you know, I don’t like to have like a Camaro or a Mustang like everybody else.”

This is definitely a car worth getting out to see. Take a trip out to South Mountain Raceway when you get a chance, and see what kind of nostalgic hot rods are there to race in that unique, nostalgic setting.
