Rain. When things are dry and dusty, we like to see it. Some people will tell you getting caught in a warm, summer rain is almost a spiritual experience that cleanses your soul. Now at the track, it’s a different story. Definitely don’t want to see raindrops falling when your car is in the staging lanes wanting to go. Nothing is quite as frustrating as having the car all ready to race and no place to go because the track’s wet. But for the track owner, it’s even more frustrating. None of these guys are going to become wealthy running a drag strip. The bills still keep coming in whether anyone’s racing or not. It’s been a tough year for the local track owners, all of them being affected by weather and canceling numerous events. Keep in mind when an event gets canceled, the revenue that comes with the event is also canceled. Losing the revenue from one event is tough on a razor-thin profit margin, but this year it’s hit a large number of weekends. Keep that in mind whenever and wherever you race at. If you have any kind of an issue on race day, calmly and respectfully discuss it with the track owner. They have the huge burden of keeping the track open weighing heavily on them and the last thing they need is someone yelling at them over a small issue. Besides that, if your issue is legit, it will only help them make a better experience for all if it can be corrected. We’re all in this sport we love together, one big family. And that is the only benefit of a rainy day at the track. More time to visit with what has become our extended family. The moral of this story? Get out and support your local track. If we don’t support the track and track owners, the day will come when there’s no more tracks to race at.
