Bruce Larson’s 28th Annual USA-1 Dragfest was held last weekend. As usual, the cars parked around the Larson Barn (more like a museum than a barn) showed a very wide variety of automotive excellence, ingenuity, and survivorhood (a made-up word, but fitting). This event is often thought of as the last hurrah for the drag racing season, and with legends in the house like host Bruce Larson, Buddy Martin, Sam Auxier Jr., Mike Dunn, and JA Jack Redd, it’s easy to overlook the cars and be starstruck by the people. And that’s what this event is all about, the people. Just my opinion, but I think it’s lasted from those humble beginnings in a basement to what it is today simply because of the strong bond of family felt within this group. If I had a dollar for every hug, every handshake, every smile from friend-to-friend, I’d have pockets full of money. It’s always about celebrating the cars, but that’s nothing compared to the celebration of getting to see your racing friends and simply enjoy the company. And with a crowd like this, total strangers can instantly become your friend. Of course, we can’t leave out the charity auction to benefit St. Jude’s. It really underscores how big the hearts of the people here are. The only sad part of this are the friends who weren’t there because they are no longer with us or have issues that prevent travel. Celebrate time with friends, especially those in the racing family, while it’s still possible. Tomorrow is not promised.
