Beaver Springs Dragway – When September comes and a chill is beginning to show up in the air, you know it’s time. Time for the Original FE Race and Reunion at Beaver Springs Dragway! This annual event has been going on for years and brings out the best FE-powered Fords in the area. For those folks out there who don’t speak Ford language, the FE engines are a series of big blocks the Ford Motor Company produced from 1958 to 1976. They’re primarily popular because the design of the block made them extremely durable. And the FE, itself? It stands for Ford-Edsel. Now that you’re up to speed, you can understand why these engines would be desirable for Fords at the drag strip, and why they’d be so popular this gang gets together every year to celebrate their cars and friendships built around them.

Beaver Bob McCardle has always been a Ford guy and a prime mover behind this FE Reunion. I’d be willing to bet he came out of the womb colored Ford blue! It’s always a pleasure seeing this guy wandering around the track he brought to life and interacting with old friends and racers in a way only he can.

The overcast skies brought cooler temperatures and air that was good for producing horsepower. The only problem was, as has happened so often this year, those skies also produced a bit of rain. Fortunately, it was only a small amount and the crew at the track are experts in getting the track taken care of when this happens. Those guys sure do a great job at keeping things moving along.

There was a lot of great racing and great cars for everyone to watch. With classes like Pro FE, Hot FE, Cool FE, and Cobra Jet, all the hottest Fords were covered. There was even an FE Bird class, so non-FEs could get in on the action! That only made a great event even greater!

The Born Again Race Team had a good showing and put on one of the more unusual shows; backing a race car up onto a ramp truck. An almost lost art these days. Check these folks out if you see them at a track. They have a message that goes beyond racing!

There’s always winners and losers at these things. Winners get cool swag (and an Ethel hug), and losers, who usually get nothing, have memories and long-lasting friendships. Everyone comes out on top at this race. Mark your calendars for next year’s event! You won’t want to miss it!!
