Beaver Springs Dragway – It was my first time attending one of Jensen’s Late Night Drag Parties at Beaver Springs Dragway. One, because my schedule and the weather never quite aligned before. Two, because I’ve been getting away from most anything that has to do with “late night.” The lure of high-horsepower hot rods was just too much to resist, though.

As soon as I got out of my car, I could practically feel the difference in the air brought by the late night crowd. It’s always a good time at the track, but on this night, there seemed to be an extra buzz in the air, a different feeling of energy.

It didn’t take too many steps through the pits before I encountered folks who were excited not only about their cars, but the cars they were going to build. One thing I really like hearing about is when someone has a plan of building a new race car with the goal of transitioning their current race car to the street. Is their anyone out there who wouldn’t (doesn’t) like driving a race car on the street?

There was some serious horsepower and some serious engineering on display on this night. Other than a majestic burnout, one of the other best things to see in drag racing is when the car pulls to the line and purges the nitrous lines. Just something about seeing those misty plumes shooting into the air that heightens the anticipation of seeing just what the hot rod can do.

One of the oft-overlooked draws of attending any kind of event at Beaver Springs Dragway is the unique skills of announcer Don “Zippo” Zimmerman. Always spot on and always entertaining, you know the voice from the tower is the seasoning that brings the whole event together. On this night, his descriptive words on the driving style of one biker was nearly worth the price of admission all by itself.

Late-night racing is a treat anywhere, but at Beaver Springs Dragway, there’s a feel all it’s own. If you haven’t attended one of these events there, you’re really missing out. Make it a point to get there whenever you can!
