South Mountain Raceway – Springtime in Pennsylvania. That magical time when you don’t know if it will be cold all day or hot all day…or…you dress for winter in the morning and are dressed for summer by evening. On this day at South Mountain Raceway, the air was cool and crisp. Perfect for racing, but a bit overcast and chilly if you were just standing around. There were a lot of great cars in attendance, all looking to get their seasons off to a good start by getting as many points as they could in the first race. One thing you’ll find at South Mountain you won’t commonly see elsewhere are some of the smallest racers you’ll see actually racing. These youngsters are getting off to a good start in their lives by learning sportsmanship, discipline, and the rewards of being outside on a race track instead of inside playing a video game. In addition to those youngsters, there was also the Jr. Dragsters most people are accustomed to seeing. It’s good for the future of the sport to have the kids out there involved and also one of the best family activities you can imagine. More people need to come out and support and encourage these kids. Even if they don’t grow up to be professional racers, being in this atmosphere will help them grow up to be good adults.

Lots of good racing action to be found in all the classes here today. The usual wide variety of cars were present, from a station wagon to classic muscle cars to imports to ATVs to motorcycles to cars that were obviously built with only going down the track in mind. Each and every one of these cars are a sight to behold. One such car that took my eye is the bright yellow Duster of Joe Valenzia. Look for an upcoming story on this car on dfmotormag.com in the near future.

Something well worth the price of the admission, is the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Jeff Bressler’s outrageous altered, which was in attendance on this day. It’s unlikely you’ll ever see anything like this hot rod anywhere! Keep checking back on dfmotormag.com for an upcoming story on this amazing car!

In closing, make sure to visit South Mountain Raceway and show all these folks (not to mention the track owner, Mountain Mike) support so the sport is kept alive in this area and there’s a place for the youngsters (and a few older folk) to learn valuable life lessons on the track they can’t get anywhere else. Bring a friend. Bring an appetite, too, because I can honestly say I had one of the best burgers there I’ve had in a long time. Get off the couch and support the sport!
