This was my first trip to South Mountain Dragway, a track I’ve been meaning to visit for quite some time but things just never seemed to work out for it to fit my schedule until this weekend. I’ll say it right off the bat, this is a unique track, like no other I’ve been to. And unique in a good way. If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times, most racers will tell you racing family is often closer than blood relatives. Now imagine your racing family all gathered together for a family picnic in a nice park surrounded by nature. Now imagine in the middle of the park a drag strip pops up. That, is, in my mind, the best way to describe South Mountain Dragway. It’s so much like a park, a river (alright, it’s a small stream) literally runs through it. All this makes it like racing in a park, surrounded by friends and family. And on this day, you could see your racing family brought out about any kind of race car imaginable, from front engine dragsters right on down to kids racing ATVs. Not to mention a few snowmobiles thrown in. And the MANDRA crew was in the house, so there was a large variety of race cars from that gang as well.

The staging lanes were always full of a diverse display of hot rods in all shapes and sizes. Perhaps the most impressive of those were the youngsters in their racers. With PA Posse Drag Racing in the house, the kids, who are the future of the sport, showed they are more than up to the task of carrying the sport forward. Everyone appreciated seeing every pass they made, many wishing they could have done something like this when they were young.

When was the last time you saw a Checker Cab drag racing? We’ll take that one step further and ask when was the last time you saw not one, but TWO Checker Cabs at the line to race each other? I’d be willing to wager this was a scene not produced anywhere else in the entire world on this day!

With all the great race cars (and people) in attendance, it was a great day to spend with family, whether it be the blood or racing variety, and a great day for drag racing! If this is the kind of action you enjoy or are curious about, take a trip to South Mountain Dragway and check it out!
